I'd be interested to see how this does on bigger servers as I only tested it on a smaller server with 8 players. But the performance with ZGC is just significantly better, so I'd recommend that personally. Just thought I'd comment on that if people thought they were going to just stick with Java 8 instead.Īlso the G1GC feature is still supported on Java 16, so you can continue to still use that if you want. I attempted to run it and it instantly crashes with an error saying the Runtime isn't supported. Just a note Java 8 no longer works for the 1.17 server at all. Java.exe -server -Xms6G -Xm圆G -XX:+UnlockExperimentalVMOptions -XX:+UseZGC -XX:+ZProactive -XX:ZCollectionInterval=600 -XX:+UseLargePages -XX:+DisableExplicitGC -XX:+AlwaysPreTouch -XX:+ParallelRefProcEnabled -XX:+PerfDisableSharedMem -jar server.jar nogui This is the command-line I used on my test server that has been running great for a week now: This article has more on the ZGC in Java 16 and associated command line options: That would of course present on the server as bad lag. A lot of times GC calls would spike to 500-800ms sometimes using the old G1GC collector. It would have GC calls that would take on average somewhere between 50-150ms. It's a latency orientated garbage collector with a garbage collection pause goal of 1ms!! Yes you read that correct 1ms! I turned on the GC debugging to see the usual pause times in the log and it was typically below 0.5ms, if not a lot of times around 0.1-0.2ms GC calls! That's a huge drop over the old G1GC which we've been using for YEARS. So the biggest enhancement that Java 16 has is probably the Z Garbage Collector (ZGC). I'm sure some of that is it's a fresh world too, no built up redstone contraptions to lag the server! LOL Players commented they weren't seeing any lag and server performance seemed significantly better than on 1.16.5 which was still running Java 8. So far had a test server up for a week with a handful of people trying it out and no issues at all. I thought make a quick post on my experience running a server on the Pre-Release 1.17 with Java 16. This brings with it a TON of new improvements over Java 8, which we've been using for YEARS. With Minecraft 1.17 moving over now to support Java 16 officially.
